School Daze

morning all! i woke up this morning to a wonderfully crisp breeze and instantly thought back to when i was i college. the fall semester was my favorite. spring time was too distracting with the beautiful flowers, sweet air and warm feel. i struggled the most during the spring because it was so hard to sit in class while looking out of the window. and even tho fall was cooler, no flowers were in bloom and made people's noses run...it was like a new start for me. every fall semester meant i was starting again...a new year, new level of classes, and sadly....new students (freshmen).

it really makes me laugh because i vividly recall walking onto campus as a freshman. i might as well have been wearing a big sign that said NAIVE because i thought everyone was so sweet and friendly. little did i know freshman were targeted prey for the upperclassmen. most of them also lacked a lot of focus...they were more interested in hanging out, meeting people and dressing up. the way girls dressed always made me laugh. even as a freshman, i didn't fall into that "fly girl" category because i was an art major and had 3 hour studios. so imagine how silly i'd look straddling a wooden stool for 3 hours in hooker heels, big dangly earrings and tight pants. but even if i weren't an art major, i still thought it was silly to come to class dressed like you were entering the club on saturday night. i'd chuckle to myself as girls would try to sneak into class undetected because they took so much time getting ready....only to have their click-clacking heels give them away. as time wore on, i grew up. i buckled down into my studies and began to appreciate my opportunity for what it really was.

i ended up taking 5.5 years to graduate because i changed my major but it didn't matter to me. i loved school. i didn't want it to end. i met my mentor 2.5 years before and felt like i couldn't get enough. it was like i was in a daze of learning and i loved it. i cared less about the parties and social scenes, less about what i wore to class and less about the guys. there was nothing like undergrad...and if i could, i'd go back and do it all over again.

***IF YOU WENT TO COLLEGE, WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT IT? IF YOU DIDN'T, WHAT DO YOU MISS ABOUT BEING THAT AGE OF ABOUT 18-23? WHAT WERE YOU DOING INSTEAD, PERHAPS GETTING Y OUR OWN PLACE OR CAR OR MAYBE TRAVELLING? EITHER WAY, WHAT DO YOU MISS ABOUT THE SCHOOL OR YOUNG PEOPLE'S DAZE?***

i JUST graduated this year and i already miss it. atl weather is always a little milder than DC weather. i agree with u about fall vs. spring semester. regardless, both semesters seemed to fly! i miss the care-freeness of it all. oh and the simplicity of college life!

Come December, it will be five years since I matriculated from my belove alma mater, N.C. A&T.
I just said to my cousin last week on a cool crisp evening that it feels like I should be leaving the library or doing some homework.
I miss being carefree the most. When I was in college, living on campus, I didn't have a care in the world other than making sure my paper was in on time.
To quote my favorite sexy musician Martin Luther:
"Man, these kids don't know how good they got it.
Once you get grown, it's on!"

Like you, it took me five and a half years to get out of college too, but I did it and it was worth it. I miss being a sophmore the most.. That was the year I was "officially" an upperclassman,
the year I began to "score" with the ladies and the year before any of the folks in my rather large clique of friends pledged anything.
We were all still pretty much a tight unit...Then we began pledging different organizations and got kind of fragmented...started going in different directions..But that sophmore year, was the bomb..We were all still together.

I've been out since'96 and every day I miss the small things that made my school special.

Tinker day (i'll explain later), ring ceremonies. gathering in someones room just to play music or shoot the breeze.

We never had the girls who got dressed up in class we were all in P.J's and sneakers. That I miss most :P

Hey Sistah!

Great post....I miss my favorite roommate in the whole wide world...being my roommate...we used to have sooooo much fun....she's still my sistah for life...but we don't get to hang that much these days....I also miss how most of my floor mates and I would turn the music on full blast after dinner and just kick it on our floor...we'd laugh...sing...and dance for at least an hour...I miss those days! We had about 22 black girls on one floor and for the most part we were all cool with it other...that was love!

Fall always makes me think of my 1st year in college...some of best memories are of things I would never do again--I commuted, but I had a CRAZY work load so I was on campus a lot..I pulled a lot of all nighters in the computer lab and I slept a lot in the student center sofas..lol..never again!! I loved it then though..I'm currently trying to get into graduate school and there memories are making me think I'm crazy for wanting to go back..lol

Great post!!!

Well, I miss the care-freeness of being young with your whole future ahead of you. I sometimes miss being that intern with no responsibilities. I graduated fiver years ago now and it seems like only yesterday. I l guess I would've partied more, but then again, I'm not really the partying type. :-)

18-23..... let's see.

18 graduated high school with hopes of going to the U of M, but i got pregnant and had my daughter! :) (no regrets) then when i was 23 i gave birth to the twins!

so 18-23 i was being a young mother and i still am! i don't take back a minute of it, god has blessed me along the way and i am grateful for each blessing! *wink*

LOL @ hooker heels in a 3-hour studio... that would have definitely looked silly!

What I miss the most about those days is that all of my friends were either down the hall or on the very next floor from me, and it only took seconds to get a party started.

today, even though most of us live nearby one another, we go months without hanging out!

*sigh*

@Jaded Nyer- I so envy you...Most of my friends were either down the hall or across the street from me.
Sadly, I rarely see any of those people now that I've been out of school. I miss the comradarie.
